When Is A French Limoges Box Considered "Retired"?

A retired Limoges box is a porcelain trinket box from Limoges France that is no longer in production.  There are various reasons for a Limoges box to be considered “retired.”   Below are some of them:

►  The Limited Edition Quantity Has Been Reached

All Limoges boxes are produced in limited editions, with the size of each edition varying greatly depending on the style. Some designs may be limited to just 50 or 100 pieces, while others may include 500, 750, 1,000 or even up to 1,500. Once the set number of a particular design has been created, that specific style and color combination will be retired.

However, if the original mold is still available, the artist or factory may choose to create the same shape with a new color modification or design, offering collectors a fresh variation of the original Limoges box.

The specific brand is no longer in production

During the 20th century, Limoges boxes became highly sought after in the United States. Numerous companies began importing these French Limoges porcelain treasures, with their own unique backstamps to establish their own lines. Over time, some of these importers ceased operations, making the boxes they sold under their brand names rare and classified as retired.

Even among currently existing Limoges brands like Beauchamp, Rochard, and Artoria, certain Limoges box styles have been retired. These retired Limoges designs hold special appeal for collectors and gift buyers seeking unique or hard-to-find pieces.

The particular design or colors are no longer produced

When the Limoges factory or a designing artist decides to stop making a particular style or color variation of a Limoges box, that specific design and color combination is officially retired.

When the Limoges factory or an artist decides to discontinue a specific style or color of a Limoges box, that particular design and color pairing is officially retired. This means no further identical Limoges box of that style or exact color combination will be produced. Once retired, these Limoges porcelain boxes often become highly sought after by collectors due to their limited availability and the unique charm each retired piece holds.

The workshop or factory producing the Limoges box is shut down.

During the 20th and 21st centuries, several factories and workshops in Limoges, France shut down and discontinued producing Limoges boxes. When these workshops closed, the unique designs and specific color patterns they created became unavailable. As a result, all Limoges boxes made in those facilities became retired, making them increasingly rare and sought after by Limoges collectors.

The Limoges artist who created and painted the design has retired

There are many exceptional independent Limoges artisans, once celebrated for their remarkable craftsmanship and artistry, who have now retired and no longer create or paint Limoges porcelain boxes.  Their designs stood out not only for the unique shapes but also for the meticulous detail and artistry in their painting. Other current Limoges artists have attempted to copy Limoges boxes painted by these master artists, but their creations never equal the level of artistry of the original Limoges boxes. Because these artists have retired, all their past creations are now considered retired as well, increasing their rarity and appeal among collectors.

The mold for that style is no longer available

Each Limoges box starts with a unique mold designed to give it its distinctive shape. Some molds are produced by general porcelain factories in Limoges and are available for use by workshops and independent artists. However, certain molds are privately owned by specific brands, factories, or artists, making those designs exclusive. When a mold is no longer in production, the corresponding shape of the Limoges box is considered retired.

Once a shape is retired, the molds are destroyed, turning the design into a piece of Limoges history. These retired Limoges boxes often become highly sought after by collectors, driving up their value due to their rarity and appeal.
