Are Limoges Boxes made in Limited Edition?

For those of you who collect French Limoges boxes, some may be concerned about your Limoges box being made in a limited edition.

It is well worth knowing that all French porcelain Limoges boxes are made in limited editions and that is what makes them so desirable.

Limoges boxes are usually designated to be made in a limited edition of 500, 1,000 or 1,500, whether they are marked as so or not.  Some specialty Limoges boxes that are made for a special occasion or event may be made in a smaller limited edition of 50 or 100.

Limoges boxes are never mass-produced.  As these collectible art pieces are made to order by importers, they are crafted in small baches each time.  Therefore, it may take many years for each style of Limoges box to reach the limited edition number.

Even though some Limoges boxes have a certain quantity designated to their specific style, they may never be produced in numbers to reach their quantity limit.

There are many factors associated with the quantities of each style of Limoges box produced.  Usually, the simpler styles of Limoges boxes with minimal painting could be made in larger numbers, compared to others.  The more complicated shapes with much higher design elements could see a much smaller numbers in production.  That in turn will greatly affect the value and availability of such Limoges boxes.

The fact that Limoges boxes are made in small quantities makes many styles of Limoges boxes quite unique.  As Limoges boxes are made by different factories and workshops and each artist has his or her own style and expertise, each of their creations can differ dramatically from others of the same shape and style.

Authentic Limoges boxes are marked in a variety of ways.  The main characteristics of a genuine French Limoges box is the phrase “Peint Main, Limoges France”.  This phrase (peint main meaning hand-painted) is all that is necessary to authenticate the Limoges box.  Some workshops/artists only use the stamp of the importer to the insignia.  Some hand-sign the Limoges and add the initials of the artist.  And some, add the limited edition number to the signature.  But whether the Limoges piece is marked with the limited edition number or not, it is always considered a limited edition piece and is loved and admired for the quality of the Limoges box.
