What Are the Top Limoges Box Brands?

When purchasing a French Limoges box, choosing a high-quality porcelain Limoges box made by a top-of-the-line Limoges brand could make a lot of difference.  In this blog post you can find information about the top luxury Limoges brands for a more informed Limoges purchase.

As you may know, the name “Limoges” is not a brand.  Limoges is a city and a region in central France.

When in 1768 keolin (a main ingredient in porcelain) was first discovered in the Limoges region, multiple factories and small workshops soon opened and began producing this highly-sought-after pure white porcelain in various shapes and for various purposes.

Soon, porcelain from Limoges soon became of high demand not only in France but throughout Europe.

Due to the fact that the porcelain made in Limoges was of a very high quality, Limoges became recognized and celebrated throughout Europe for its porcelain production.  Soon, the term “Limoges” became synonymous with high quality French porcelain.

Today, the city of Limoges is known as the porcelain capital of France.

The process of producing porcelain today uses the same methods porcelain was produced from its inception.  Limoges porcelain production continues to this day in the city of Limoges and its vicinity in the same tradition of old by highly-skilled and experienced artisans.  There are many small factories in and around Limoges that produce these valuable porcelain products.  There are also small workshops and ateliers in Limoges that specialize in porcelain painting only.

Insignia on Limoges Boxes

As mentioned above, there are various factories in Limoges producing porcelain items.  Some factories produce only tableware items and others also produce decorative art pieces as well as the highly-collectible porcelain Limoges boxes.

There are various brands for Limoges tableware as well as decorative arts.  However, in this blog post we only focus on brands for French Limoges boxes.

Limoges boxes that are produced by various factories and workshops in Limoges can be marketed directly without being under any specific brand.  In order to be deemed authentic, the only markings these Limoges boxes need to have is the term “Peint Main” (hand-painted) and “Limoges, France.”  These markings guarantee that the Limoges box is indeed crafted and hand-painted in Limoges, France and is authentic.

Outstanding Limoges Brands

Since the mid 20th century, Limoges boxes were introduced into the United States and quite rapidly became popular with collectors and gift buyers.

About this time, some workshops in Limoges established a brand name for their Limoges boxes to market to Europe and the United States.  Various other US Limoges importers also established brand names to market their Limoges boxes.  Many of such brands produced exclusive styles of Limoges boxes that were only available under their own brand.

Some such brands successfully continue to the present and others have ceased to do business.

Below are several of the most well-known and respected Limoges brands producing French porcelain Limoges boxes.
